How do you go about being in a big art show? I wish I could have a mentor to walk me through the steps

I was asked:

How do you go about being in a big art show? I wish I could have a mentor to walk me through the steps.
That is a great question. Let’s start with what experiences you have had so far.

Answer:

Have you ever had a booth or table at a small craft show or just been a customer at one? Tables and displays full of hand-crafted items, all priced, and the artist is greeting their customers. That is a nice place to get the feel of a sales event. Did you just apply to the event, or did you have to send pictures of what items you were selling? How did you or others display items for customers. What stood out and what looked like a pile of “stuff.” What would you have done different? What displays did you like? Don’t forget the internet is full of pictures and information.

Let’s see how a big show is different. You will need to apply with a fee, to have your art juried by artists who do evaluate photos in regard to quality, originality, and potential salability. This is where pictures speak a thousand words. If accepted you will receive a plethora of festival information such as parking, set-up, take down, and please pay your booth fee. Always ask questions of the management as they want you to be as successful as possible. If you were not accepted, feel sad for a bit but dig in for better pictures or a more marketable original product.

Depending on whether the festival is inside or outside you can plan your display. A canopy can be a big expense but very necessary. How do you want the flow of your items to be seen and walked around? Do you just have a few things – then bring them right up to the entrance of the booth to boldly show them off. Look online, go to festivals to study others displays. Can customers easily walk though the booth or is there a bottle neck area. A word about canopies. Get a standard 10’ x 10’ at the bottom and top. I strongly recommend you consider a fire retardant canopy as that is becoming a festival rule. Have sandbags or weights to attach to the legs. Believe me and others that just like an umbrella you tent can blow away. What a mess if you have art attached or it lands on another artists booth. Test your canopy out first and know that the Velcro on the side walls is long enough and sewn on well to hold them if pulled or it’s windy. It is hard to fix a flapping wall at the show.

What to take for the sale?

Cash, a money charging application on your phone, some record keeping notebook / paper and pencil, garbage bag, shopping bags, business cards, a list for customers to sign up for emails, a chair for you, a small area/ small table for you to wrap or bag up items. You can put extra items under tables or behind displays but if your outside protect items from moist grass or rough surfaces. Be sure to bring your artwork all priced for sales, extra sales tags and know where you cash/phone are. You never know if a customer or other artists will pop in early to purchase a favorite. The sale day is “long”. Bring some art to work on as customers love to see that.

Setting up by yourself or with a partner can feel like a mad dash but can be a fun time. Never hesitant to ask for help with a canopy or heavy table. We all help each other. Take a deep breath, give yourself plenty of time and go step by step. It helps to practice setting up at home or diligently on paper prior to the festival. Set up your canopy, then tables and shelves with covers if needed. Stage your artwork, step out of the booth and take a look as a customer. You will see artists that never rearrange their items or others who are constantly like me fuzzing and inching things one way or another.

Get to know your side-by-side booth mates as they are your friends and your business partners for the sale. Our Festival has volunteers to help if you need to run to the restroom or get some food.

Still wondering….? I strongly recommend that you volunteer to see the setup, hear artists talk with customers, help with problems, and visit with the management.

Three Rivers Gallery & Gifts Update and Important Survey Due June 10th!

We have all experienced tremendous change this past year including the TRAG Gallery. First thanks to everyone who participated and supported the Gallery this past year.  I am pleased to say we are still hanging in there, but we are considering some changes and need our members’ input before moving forward. The following is an update on the Gallery and a questionnaire that we need your response on by June 10th.

Due to the absence of a tenant in the café, the Gallery has experienced much slower traffic, and some of you expressed a desire to find another space for the Gallery. TRAG board members made a concerted effort to find a different space but found that most spaces are double what we are paying. I would like to make everyone aware that the Singer Hill owners have done everything possible over the past year to keep us going. We would not be open without them, and we owe them our deepest gratitude and support.

Due to the slower traffic and vacant space at Singer Hill, we are considering keeping the Gallery open only from Friday through Sunday from 10-4 until the owners find a new tenant. Lesser hours will also help to man the gallery, which has been an issue over the past few months. Some members are more comfortable with a second person, but this has made it difficult to fill all spots. Please be aware that fees, commission percentages, and hours will remain the same – only the days will change. TRAG needs your input before putting any of these changes into place. Please fill out the following survey and return by June 10th. This will give us enough information and time to announce a Call for Artists.

His daughter Brianna Bliquez is his go-to professional for Etsy, and is a wealth of information for how to market on this popular Artists‘ sales site. Come join us for a fun informational and productive presentation.

Three Rivers Gallery & Gifts update

The Three Rivers Gallery and Gifts welcomes spring and the long-awaited warmer days as artists fill the gallery for the April, May, and June rotation.

We all see the struggles for business to rebuild as the gallery struggles without a cafe. The owners of Singer Hill have begun to see a steady stream of prospective new tenants for the café, and we are grateful that they are diligent in finding a tenant that best fits our location.

The new spring rotation heralds in 24 of our steadfast artists and 2 new artists that have recently joined TRAG. Our social media team continues to reach out daily with posts on Instagram and Facebook. Remember to comment and share TRAG’s posts. This helps Facebook keep our Gallery in the public’s eye and bring people into the Gallery to see TRAG’s unique and beautiful Pacific Northwest art. The Gallery’s current hours are: Wednesday – Sunday, 10am to 4pm.

Are you bored at home? Miss being around the gallery art and artists? We have Wi-Fi, large tables for artists to work on projects, and even coffee and lunch across the street at “The Hive”. Since TRAG prefers 2 artists per shift, we need your help for staffing. Come play with your art, your shift partner, or even just yourself – and visit for a half day or one-day at the Gallery!

Three Rivers Gallery & Gifts Coordinators

Kudos Korner – Holly Kroenig

There are some people that are sincerely sweet by nature. Their concern for others and kind words are never put on. When they ask, “How are you?” They genuinely want to know – and they have big enough shoulders to help carry your burden if that is the case. Holly Kroenig is one such person and we are blessed to have her not only as a member of the Guild, but one of our Gallery Managers.

Holly is actually one of our longest standing members. She joined TRAG in 2003, and immediately took the responsibility of hanging art in the Gallery for each rotation – and she has never stopped. From TRAG’s days at the old Friends of the Library store to the gallery at Singer Hill, Holly’s impeccable Artist’s eye displays our members’ artwork with flair and elegance. Colors are coordinated to best please the eye of the customer, and you will often see Holly tirelessly arranging and rearranging the pieces for the perfect presentation. Holly is renowned for her skill at Gallery coordination not just for TRAG but for our Community. She also runs the Art Pavilion at the Clackamas County Fair each year, and helps hang the art for the Charbonneau Art Festival.

Holly Kroenig is an award-winning artist in her own right. She regularly presents at her local gallery in Arizona, the Charbonneau Art show, and always at the TRAG Gallery. Her larger pieces of a locomotive train and a roaring lion were quickly sold when she first presented them, and customers often come into the Gallery specifically asking for her artwork. You can find more of Holly’s work at Fine Art America https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/holly-kroening/shop and Etsy https://www.etsy.com/shop/HollyJKFineArt. Holly is one of our most successful artists with the Guild, and we are so grateful and fortunate to have her. Next time you see Holly – thank her for her service. TRAG would not be what we are today without her.

Citizens Bank Non-profit Fundraising Day – October 21st 10am-1pm!

TRAG has been asked to participate in a fun interactive fundraising day with Citizens Bank. Citizens Bank, who is one of Oregon City’s strongest community supporters, is also one of TRAG’s strongest advocates. Citizens is always the first to donate to our Festival each year and they also host one of TRAG’s galleries. On October 21st Citizens is organizing a fun way to donate $2000 to 15 of Oregon City’s non-profits – and TRAG was asked to participate as one of the non-profits! In addition to the $100 that each non-profit will receive for that day, they have been asked to participate in a marble throwing game to win an additional $400 for first place or $300 for second place. Each non-profit will creatively design a box to catch the public’s eye. These will be placed outside the bank. Then people coming to attend the event will be given a few marbles and attempt to throw the marbles into their favorite box. The box with the most marbles will win an additional $400 and second place will win an additional $300. Think of carnival games, but instead of winning a kewpie doll we can receive up to $500 for TRAG.

So come October 21st to Citizens bank at 19245 Mollala Ave in Oregon City across from the Post Office any time between 10am and 1pm. Tell your friends, family, children and grandchildren. Come see out artistic creative box and help win up to $500 for TRAG!

October 12th Virtual Guild Meeting – Writing Compelling Artist Statements

Susan Schenk will present a ZOOM workshop on writing compelling artist statements.

An artist’s statement tells others about you and your work. Writing one is a powerful exercise for
articulating your passion and art. But, it’s also a challenge to capture in words what is often so
hard to express and intangible. No matter your medium or level of proficiency, a good statement
is a useful tool.

In this workshop, you will be guided through a series of questions to gather information to create
a sophisticated artist’s statement, and to deepen your thinking about your own art making. If you
are happy with your current artist’s statement, then write a statement for the fabulous artist you
aspire to be, so that you can set that intention into the universe. Or, answer the questions as
preparation for when you are interviewed for a national artist’s publication.
