We are having a TRAG member meeting on 9/13/21 from 7-8:30 pm on Zoom.  

Please come and hear a presentation about the Stevens-Crawford Heritage House Museum proposed transition to a community arts and culture center.   

This new direction would establish Stevens Center for Arts & Culture (SCAC) as a destination in Clackamas county.  This is exciting news for TRAG members!  

We will also be discussing the upcoming election of officers and our board members can answer any questions you have about the board positions. This is an exciting time for our guild. Come and hear all that is happening!

Citizens Bank and TRAG

Citizens Bank Gallery

TRAG and Citizens Bank are partnering again! The gallery is shining brightly like the gem she is and we have more good news! Citizens is arranging for a local newspaper article about our gallery partnership and an invitation to check our our Guild. Great news for us! This puts us out in the community and hopefully will encourage some new members.

The other exciting news is that TRAG is being featured at the GMOC (Good Morning Oregon City) weekly Chamber of Commerce meeting on Wednesday, September 22nd. Citizens Bank is the host and TRAG will have 5-10 minutes to speak about our Guild! There are about 35 active Chamber members that attend whether in person or Zoom so this is another great opportunity for us! We might even acquire more pARTners in ART!

TRAG is continuing to be active in our community and in our art. If you haven’t seen the latest art in Citizens Bank Gallery, stop in! There is a wonderful variety of photographs, digital art, mixed media, fused glass and the winners from the ARt and POetry contest. Here’s to continuing to create beautiful art in all its forms!

Plans for an Oregon City Arts Center

Community Support

A potential site is currently being discussed as a possible Art cultural center in Oregon City. TRAG has been invited to join Art in Oregon and the Clackamas County Historical Society to review the possibility of transforming the Stevens Crawford House into an Art Center.

The Stevens Crawford House is one of the largest historical houses open to the public in Oregon City. It sits at the corner of Washington and 6th Street across from the Pioneer Community Center and has unlimited potential for a possible gallery, event space, and artists’ residencies. Although talks are only in the beginning stages, it is an exciting opportunity for Oregon City.

More to come as TRAG explores the possibilities of this space with Art in Oregon and the Clackamas County Historical Society.

Murals Are Back!

With the mural code now near completion, plans for murals are already underway. A restoration of the Trolley above Don Pepe’s restaurant at 705 Main Street will begin on September 20th. TRAG’s own Cathy Rowe is the Lead Artist and Project Manager. Spotters are needed to direct traffic on the sidewalk as Cathy will be using a scissorlift. A new mural funded by TRAG through the Metro Enhancement grant is planned for next year at White Rabbit Black Ink Coffee Shop on the corner of 99 and Main Street. Lead Artist for this project will be an artist from the Confederated Tribes with help from TRAG Artists. Plans for a theme depicting waterfalls and rivers are currently in discussion stage.

Lynda Orzen, a TRAG member and volunteer for the Friends of the Library, will be hiring TRAG artist Lucas Nickerson to create a mural on the Friends of the Library Building. The building is located 814 7th Street.

TRAG Member, Cathy Rowe, Wins the Soulflags Art Mural Contest!

Oregon City Festival of the Arts, Events Organized by TRAG

Soulflags Art Center, a new addition to Main Street, is bringing an opportunity for the community to take part in beautifying the intersection of Hwy 99E and Main Street with several mosaic panels of well-known masterpieces altered to include an Oregon City landmark or icon. In addition, Soulflags created an art design contest for one of the panels to be created by a local artist.

The winner of this contest was Cathy Rowe, who recreated Henri Matisse’s “The Dance” with the figures depicted as pioneers with the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in the background. Soulflags will recreate an outlined/sketched version of Rowe’s painting onto a grid pattern of sixty 6-inch x 6-inch square tiles for the community to glaze/paint. These tiles combined will make a 3-foot by 5-foot mosaic masterpiece.

With several mosaics completed at TRAG’s Festival of the Arts, tiles will be available to glaze/paint at Oregon City’s Saturday Market on several occasions if necessary. Dates to be announced as Soulflags needs to contact the OC Saturday Market to coordinate. Soulflags will fire the ceramic tiles and grout the tile to concrete backer board. Mosaics will be displaced locally prior to placing on building located at 504 Main Street.

Fifth Annual Oregon City Festival of the Arts

COVID couldn’t stop us this year and neither could the weather! This year’s Festival of the Arts was a huge success for artists and visitors alike. The festival saw an estimated 2500 attendees. Trieste made sure to speak with all the artists on Sunday right before breakdown. She wanted to thank each one of them for attending and inquired about sales. 99% of the artists claimed it to be a very successful event financially. About half a dozen said it was the best show they had ever attended.

Trieste thanked all the volunteers that helped with this year’s event. It really takes a community of artists to present a large event. There is a lot of planning to take place behind the scenes. Planning for an event of this size takes at least a year to organize. We were thrilled to be able to open this year despite Covid restrictions and the heat. Even with the heat both days, record numbers of visitors came through both days. The strategically placed misters helped keep everyone cooler! Noticed a lot of larger art pieces leaving with our guests.

Thanks to some of the volunteers: Jeanne Cardana and Gary who volunteered for most of the day Saturday, Cheri Bosserman for lending us misters that literally saved lives throughout the weekend. Lynda Orzen who volunteered all three days, Sue Woodworth who not only managed the performers but had a booth, and Jeanne Kelly Brown also had a booth. Committee members this year were truly phenomenal – Kerry Edwards and Rochelle Rau managed the volunteers and kept the ball rolling throughout the weekend. Melody Bush, our social media point person who truly was a huge reason for our success, Cheri who kept us on budget and managed the finances, Lynda Orzen for her experience and volunteerism, Ingrid Aubry for the flyers, postcards, ads, and programs. Cathy Rowe ran the first virtual silent auction which turned out to be a huge success. Yelena – who was called on non-stop for online application help, announcements, and website. Last but not the least was Trieste family of 7 members and most importantly her husband Roger who helped her every step of the way.

This is Trieste’s last year as President and won’t be organizing the 2022 event. There will be a manual available on “How To” and quite a few members with years of experience. The more these events take place, the easier it gets through the years. We know an army of volunteers will step forward to create the 2022 Oregon City Festival of the Arts! The Festival has become a signature arts event in Oregon City! Let’s keep it growing!

Murals are back in Oregon City!

You can now apply for a permit to paint a mural on your building!We’re very excited that the City Commission has seen how important murals are to the vibrancy and activity in downtown spaces. This week they approved the NEW mural code! You can start applying for those permits now! 

It’s taken several years to see this happen and DOCA is very grateful to the City staff and Commission and especially the Three Rivers Artist Guild for helping us make this a possibility. If you are interested in painting a mural on your building and would like to start the process, we’d be happy to help. 

More information and the application information is coming shortly, but we wanted to share with you right away so you can start getting your creativity working!

The mural code is on its final stages of being accepted by the City of Oregon City. After a year of hard work by Laura Terway Oregon City Community Development Director, Matthew Weintraub Toursim Specialist, the Oregon City Commissioners Board, and with the help of TRAG, the code is in its final stages of acceptance.

TRAG has already applied and received a grant through the Metro Enhancement Grant for two mural projects A restoration of the mural at Don Pepe’s of the Street car Trolley on Main Street will begin in September, and a new mural at the corner of 99 and Main Street at the White Rabbit Black Ink Coffee shop is in the planning stages.

Thank you Cathy Rowe from the the Three Rivers Artist Guild for all your hard work in helping to prepare the grant application. We are excited to have the funding available as soon as the mural code is in place. Keep your eye out for updates as we prepare for these two exciting mural projects.

The Guild IS More Than a Gallery

TRAG Announcements

When the Guild first organized, we were asked to show at the End of the Trail in their gift gallery. Wasn’t much but it got our artists work out into the public view. During that same time, the guild had representation on the newly formed Main Street Oregon City group. The guild was given the opportunity to open “Nomad” galleries in open office spaces on Main Street. Don Slack, owner of property on Main Street and one of the founding members of the Main Street program offered several locations to the guild as property was vacated. We were offered to participate in the First Friday events on Main Street. Businesses opened their doors to artists to set up mini-galleries. These events brought hundreds of residents to Main Street to discover the art, music and food.

The next gallery was located in the Friends of the Library Bookstore. They shared space with books and bookstore volunteers. This location worked well as an interim gallery until being asked to move into the Singer Hill facility. The community always looked forward to our artist events to meet the artists and see all the new artwork.

Now we face a new day with a very difficult year behind us. The guild had a wonderful Pop-up art event in May when we saw new faces out to enjoy an open-air event. In 2 weeks we celebrate the annual Oregon City Festival of the Arts where we will welcome thousands of visitors.

The guild will have a gallery once again and we will continue to work with other organizations to put on city events. We’ve helped the Library celebrate its birthday, worked with the Heritage community, had an art show in the Forest and worked on projects with the Main Street Organization for many years.

We remain a very vital part of this community and continue to contribute to the arts and culture of the city. Brighter days are ahead!
