First TRAG Member Meeting since March 2020! We’ll have a very brief business meeting, introduce the new board members, and then have a short discussion on the future of TRAG and what we want to focus on in 2021. Come with your ideas. THEN……we’ll have a time to socialize and get to know one another again.

We really hope to see you there. Masks (worn over the nose and mouth) required. Please do not come if you feel ill.

In-Person January Meeting!!

Updated January 8th, 2022: based on the results of the membership survey, the January 10th general meeting has been canceled. Stay safe and healthy, everyone!

We will be returning to in-person meetings starting in January!! Our first meeting, on Monday January 10th, will be at the Pioneer Center basement meeting room from 7-8:30 pm. We will have a very short business meeting and then spend a bit of time brainstorming ideas for the future of TRAG.

I would appreciate it if people could think about the following things and bring your ideas with you on January 10th:

1. Would you be interested in changing the TRAG member meeting time to a Saturday from 10am-12:30pm or 1;00pm? This would allow for longer presentations/art workshops; allow members who are not able to drive at night to attend; more social time to connect with fellow artists. The schedule would be:

10-10:15–Socialize
10:15-10:45 (MAX!)–Business meeting
10:45-12:30–Program (workshop and/or presentation)
12:30-1:00–Sharing of art brought in by members (critique if desired)

2. Presentations/workshops you would like to see offered.

3. How important is it to you to have a Gallery associated with TRAG? Would you be willing to participate on a committee to work on finding a new Gallery space?

4. Would you be interested in having a fundraising Gala/silent auction this year?

5. Should we plan on having OCFOTA again this year or move that to every other year? Would you be interested in participating on the planning committee for OCFOTA if we move ahead with it this year?

Those are the things I can think of off the top of my head. We can have some discussion about these items, but the goal of the January meeting is to RECONNECT with each other!! There will be large post-it presentation pads around the room that you can write your suggestions on as you are socializing with others. The board will take the ideas you write down and make plans for this coming year.

I’m excited to be the President starting in January and am looking forward to a year of reconnection with members.

NOTE:
We will be following the CDC Guidelines and the current mandates put in place by our governor in order to keep everyone safe. Masks will be required and must be worn over your mouth and nose at ALL times while in the meeting. We ask that if you have any ill symptoms, that you not attend the meeting.

TRAG Gallery Note

Our TRAG Gallery has had the best of times and better times are slowly brewing for our future. November 30  was met with Phil and Vicki Yates as we moved out of the Singer Hill building and they are remodeling for the future. We all will miss times spent together.

As gallery managers: myself, Jeanne Kelly-Brown, Holly Kroenig welcomed Tamara Scott’s help every step of the way as we took care of business. We all cleaned, lifted toted and moved items out the door. It wasn’t an easy task as the holidays are coming and we all were working on our art projects at the same time.

Over the month our gallery furniture was purchased and welcomed into several new local galleries. The rolling card rack was delivered to a new Art start up in North Portland. The old oak jewelry case that was originally purchased from an antique shop where “The Hive” is, went to an artist consignment shop in Sandy, Oregon. Tamara took on the challenge of listing miscellaneous pieces to Craigslist and Marketplace. All in all we sold a total of $1650 and had a a minimal load to the dump. We thank the muscle men: my husband and Holly’s for taking on some big tasks.

TRAG needs to include a gallery in its future in promoting new and established artists and keeping local art in the community. That future gallery will come in time.

So many of our cultural organizations, including the Three Rivers Artist Guild, have been hit especially hard by the pandemic – there has never been a more important time for Oregonians to support arts and culture through the cultural tax credit.

If you donated to any arts, heritage or humanities nonprofits in Oregon this year, you can double your impact for FREE through the Oregon Cultural Trust tax credit.

Here’s how:

  1. Total the amount you gave to the non-profits on the list found through the Oregon Cultural Trust site at https://culturaltrust.org/. The Three Rivers Artists Guild is on this list
  2. Give a matching amount to the Cultural Trust at https://appengine.egov.com/apps/or/oct/donationpayment or by mail by December 31st. to Oregon Cultural Trust, 775 Summer Street NE, Suite 200 Salem, OR 97301
  3. On your State Tax Form, report your gift to the Oregon Cultural Trust and you will get 100% back!

TRAG gallery is going into storage

The TRAG gallery has been in Singer Hill Cafe for 10 years running very smoothly for all but the last year plus.  Unfortunately for us Singer Hill Cafe owners are remodeling for their future that will not include TRAG. We have been fortunate over all these years that the Singer Hill owners have offered us a home. We wish them well.

At this time with long discussions between the gallery managers and then a board vote we close out this chapter of the TRAG gallery at Singer Hill. The majority of gallery furniture has been sold and some went to the TRAG storage.

The gallery provided a special venue for new artist to experience being juried and sell their art for the first time. With an all volunteer TRAG membership more than just a location to sell art formed. We weathered some difficult times together over the last year.

As we go into the next year, we hope to recreate another TRAG gallery to call home.

November 8th General Meeting by Zoom – Important!

Please join us by Zoom at the TRAG general meeting on November 8th at 7pm. The last meeting of 2021 will see out the current elected Board members and welcome our new board members in. You will be able to meet each of the nominees and vote that night if you have not already done so electronically through the email you received in October. Tamara Scott, the newly nominated president for 2022 will present her focus and vision for 2022. You will also be introduced to Rhoda Bohr, Vice President; Cathy Rowe, Secretary; and Nancy Graham, Treasurer.

TRAG is also excited to have a representative from Oregon Cultural Trust who will explain how a donation to Arts and Culture in Oregon can actually be paid by Oregon through your own personal taxes.  

Most importantly, TRAG would like to hear from you, our membership, for your visions and hopes for TRAG in 2022.

Trolley Car Mural – Fully Restored!

And the mural restoration of the Trolley car at Don Pepe’s Restaurant at 705 Main Street is finished! Through rain, wind, sun and heat, Cathy Rowe, lead muralist and TRAG member, toiled on from September 13th to October 11th and the final results are breathtaking. What was once a dilapidated cracked and indistinguishable mural originated in 1992, is now a vibrant display of colors that beg to be seen as people go about their business on Oregon City’s busy Main Street.

The restoration of the Trolley car on Main Street was the kick off event for murals once again in Oregon City. The project was financed by TRAG through Oregon City’s Metro Enhancement grant. The outstanding funding will be used for a future brand new mural at a location to be announced towards the spring/summer of 2022. Look for murals coming to Oregon City with Friends of the Library, Live Edge Salon, and White Rabbit Black Ink – to name a few. Art and culture is alive and well in Oregon City! Thank you Cathy and Oregon City for ushering us in to this momentous time.

Restoration of the Trolley Car Mural at 705 Main Street Has Begun!

On September 20th, TRAG’s own Cathy Rowe began work on the Trolley Car Restoration. The Mural is located at 705 Main Street under Don Pepe’s restaurant. A kick of event took place on September 25th for the public. Tables and chairs were set up across the street at Edward Jones and the Bridgewater Beer and Wine Supply. Don Pepe’s offered complimentary chips and salsa as the public had a chance to take a seat and enjoy the progress. Lots of smiles and conversations as we all watched Cathy and enjoyed the views!

More news on new potential murals will be announced in the coming months.

Oregon City Announces the New Art Commission!

Mayor Rachel Lyles Smith with Commissioner Rocky Smith has selected an Art Commission for Oregon City. The official announcement and appointments were presented at the City Commissioner meeting on Thursday evening September 15th. This is an important and exciting step In Oregon City’s focus to bring Arts and Culture to the forefront in Oregon City’s vision for the future.

Trieste Andrews from TRAG was appointed a 3-year position. 8 additional members include representation from 6 local art organizations plus two citizen appointees completing the 9-member commission.

More to come in TRAG’s news as the new Art Commission begins its mission to integrate art and culture into Oregon City.

Who said watching paint dry was boring!

Join Oregon City on Saturday, September 25 from 11 am till 4 pm.

Murals are once again allowed in Oregon City. The first project to take place is the restoration of the historic mural “First Trolley” at 705 Main Street above the Don Pepe’s restaurant. The project will take place from September 20th to October 2nd.

On Saturday September 25th there will be a viewing event from 11-4. Tables and chairs will be set up for viewing while you munch on chips and salsa from Don Pepe’s restaurant. Please feel free to order a yummy Mexican dinner to go after the project.

The mural of the “First Trolley” was created by artist Larry Kangas in 1992. The building was originally constructed in 1908 and has held the OK Barber Shop and later a confectionery store. It is one of the few remaining wood frame buildings on Main Street.

The mural is a depiction of one of the first trolleys on Oregon City’s Main Street. The face of the conductor in the front of the trolley is that of businessman Urb Arbour, then owner of the building.
