Spotlight on Our Members

This month’s Kudo’s goes out to all the Artists who have worked so hard to make September happen:

And let’s give a big shout out to some of our unsung heroes – the supportive husbands, families and friends who somehow get roped into most of the things we do. They not only sacrifice their personal time with us so we can pursue our passions but help out as well. John Woodworth who traveled back and forth to Salem with his wife Sue picking up slat boards for the gallery rooms, and then cutting and mounting them in the Gallery. Roger Rau, Trieste Andrews’ husband, who laid in the gallery carpets, made the boards for the Heritage Figures, and mounted new hanging kits in the café. And all of our wives, husbands, children and friends who support us every step of the way, who understand that “10 more minutes” on an art project sometimes turns into another hour – and understand that our passion for art is who we are – and love us anyway.

CITIZENS BANK TRAG FUNDRAISER THURSDAY SEPT. 10TH

TRAG Announcements

TRAG has been asked to participate in a fun interactive fundraising day with Citizens Bank. On September 10th FROM 10AM – 1PM Citizens is organizing a fun way to donate $2000 to 15 of Oregon City’s non-profits – and TRAG was asked to participate as one of the non-profits! Each non-profit was asked to design a box to catch the public’s eye. These will be placed outside the bank. Then people coming to attend the event will be given a few marbles and attempt to throw the marbles into their favorite box. Each participant will receive $100, but the box with the most marbles will win an additional $400 and second place will win an additional $300. Think of carnival games, but instead of winning a kewpie doll we can receive up to $500 for TRAG. So come on Thursday the 10th anytime from 10am – 1pm at Citizens Bank 19245 Molalla Ave across from the Post office and join the fun!

By the time you read this newsletter, TRAG’s Gallery Art/in weekend August 28th, 29th 30th will have come and gone, and on September 2nd the TRAG desk’s welcome sign will have been turned on. The 4 musketeers: Trieste Andrews, Holly Kroening, Jeanne Kelly Brown and I spent lots of sweaty, fun and encouraging hours working together in the Gallery. Cheri Bosserman connected TRAG to our WIFI and set up the iPad for square charges – now ready for the Gallery’s first sale. Come visit, or bring your Art in for the September October rotation, and you will find new paint, new carpet, moved cubbies and jewelry cabinets, mopped floors and more slat wall sheets so pictures can be hung without holes in the walls. 
The new Yvonne’s at Singer Hill has also given us permission to hang 2D art in the café at their discretion. We will have the large area in the cafe room that leads into the Gallery. September and October will feature art from TRAG’s artists. Moving forward, we will dedicate this space for emerging artists from our local schools and colleges.

The new TRAG gallery committee continues to organize and do the necessary work to reopen our space. TRAG has a new Gallery/Artist contract, Indemnity and Hold Harmless Agreement and 2D and 3D tags and labels for artwork. These forms are all located on the TRAG website. 

Social distancing rules will be strictly adhered to. All art items will have visible tags for customers to view without having to pick them up. If customers wish to pick up the art, gloves will be required and supplied by the Gallery manager. As with all retail spaces at the present time, we will have social distancing signs, gloves, hand sanitizer, and masks required and available for all. 

We have had to follow the lead of Yvonne’s cafe opening in fits and starts in trying to pick a reopening date for the gallery. Our current rotation for September/October was chosen to whet the appetite of the customers. Our goal is then to provide a full November/December rotation for holiday shopping. As we move into the new year of 2021, rotations will be 3 months each.  

As I painted in the gallery over the last weekend, I had the first exciting glimmer of what Yvonne’s cafe clientele attendance (and potentially our own) will be like. My first clue was seeing “so many cars” parked all around the cafe. As I entered the café, I found people sitting at tables on the sidewalk, and people waiting to go in as they adhered to the social distancing rules.  All this – and Yvonne’s was still only serving coffee and pastries. The cafe will start serving breakfast the last weekend of August. Yvonne and her staff are just lovely and are excited as we are for TRAG’s potential for exposure. 

Note some TRAG gallery changes as we work with our new tentmates of Yvonne’s at Singer Hill.  TRAG artists coming to the gallery to work or visit must use the cafe’s main door. The door that enters the large room where the Gallery is located will remain locked per the cafe’s request. This is due to current COVID restrictions and ensuring that no more than the maximum number of people are allowed in the café space at one time. The café staff will be mentioning our Gallery as they bring customers to their seats.  We can use that door to put our Gallery sandwich board out each morning but place it by the main door. Make sure the door is relocked after reentering the café. Also, the café’s hours are 7am – 3pm. We will address those hours for the next rotation. Pre-Covid Singer Hill Cafe gave a TRAG members a 10% discount on any purchases made while working in the gallery. As Yvonne’s is just starting and having to run at 1/2 capacity we will not be asking for any discounts. Last but not least – make sure you wear your masks while working or visiting the gallery with noses covered. This is a state requirement for service industries.

If you have questions and concerns, please feel free to let the gallery committee know. Please be kind. Keep in mind that we are all volunteers working our hardest to promote you and our TRAG gallery. The suggestion box is gone. In its place is a blank journal for ongoing comments, suggestions and questions. Kind of like a Gallery Diary. These are difficult times, and we welcome not only suggestions, but any help you can give.

We welcome you to share our opening on your social media platforms and to all your friends and family.  TRAG Gallery and Yvonne’s at Singer Hill will be open 7 days a week 9-2pm starting September 2nd. See you there! 

September 14th Virtual Guild Meeting – Writing Compelling Artist Statements

Susan Schenk will present a ZOOM workshop on writing compelling artist statements.

An artist’s statement tells others about you and your work. Writing one is a powerful exercise for
articulating your passion and art. But, it’s also a challenge to capture in words what is often so
hard to express and intangible. No matter your medium or level of proficiency, a good statement
is a useful tool.

In this workshop, you will be guided through a series of questions to gather information to create
a sophisticated artist’s statement, and to deepen your thinking about your own art making. If you
are happy with your current artist’s statement, then write a statement for the fabulous artist you
aspire to be, so that you can set that intention into the universe. Or, answer the questions as
preparation for when you are interviewed for a national artist’s publication.

Kudos Korner – Lynne Collum

This month’s Kudos Korner contribution was given by multiple members of our Board:

Silversmith, Fiber Artist

Lynne has been a member of the guild for over 10 years. She has participated in all the TRAG festivals and art shows mainly as a silver artist. In the past couple of years, she has fallen in love with her sewing and embroidery machine making purses and fun bags. One thing you probably don’t know about Lynne is that she does the bookkeeping for the gallery.

Years ago, when the gallery was in the Friends of the Library Bookstore, Lynne took over the gallery bookkeeping from Janice Gunderson. When Lynne took over, she worked with Karin Morey the bookstore manager to verify sales. After being in the bookstore for several years, the guild’s gallery was invited to move into the Singer Hill Café.

Lynne created an inventory sheet and price tags to help artists keep track of their work when on display and sold. Each month the receipts and inventory sheets are gone over carefully so artists will be paid accordingly. A lot of guild members probably haven’t met our illusive bookkeeper. Lynne lives in Molalla and doesn’t attend the monthly membership meetings. You will see her in the gallery the beginning of the month doing the books so our artists will receive payment for sold artwork.

We want to thank Lynne for her years of volunteering for the guild and the experience and expertise she brings to the gallery.

Opening the TRAG gallery has been penciled in for September 2nd.   

Thirty-nine TRAG artists have been patiently waiting to fill the gallery to the brim with wonderful creations. Our goal is to follow the Oregon health guidelines in planning the safest environment for our artists and customers. 
We are limiting the number of artists at a time to bring in their art to the gallery over a 3 day period. A skeleton crew will stage the art and ready the gallery for our September 2nd opening.  We will have a mask, glove, and hand sanitizer table at our entrance and will monitor a limited customer flow for social distancing. In planning safety for our artists, some will not be working shifts in the gallery. Those who are at a higher health risk and / or hesitant to be in a more social situation will have their shifts covered by other members. Our hours will be shorter, from 9am – 2pm. 

We will not be celebrating our opening with an Artist reception in these pandemic times. We welcome you to come and see the Gallery changes, view, and possibly purchase your fellow members artwork.

Three Rivers Gallery & Gifts reopening update

Our schedule to reopen is being pushed out at least another 2 weeks.  

Due to COVID 19 and Singer Hill business plans I can share that we need to wait “for a go ahead”. We cannot put any dates in play at this time.      Be glad that our small gallery rooms have fresh new carpet that was installed by Trieste and her wonderful husband Roger. Roger also provided some molding stripes to complete our main room wall hanging area.  We have newly hung 4’x8′ and 2’x 4′ slat wall pieces for hanging pictures on so less wall space will have nail holes. Those came from a great find on Craigslist. I thank my husband for helping Holly and I put those up.  We were offered a great price on a rot iron jewelry display case and thank Sue Thomas and her husband for jumping from their seats immediately to pick it up.  A big thank you to Trieste Andrews who single handedly cleaned our bathroom~!!  Our small (for safety reasons) gallery cleanup/staging crew has just a bit more to pick straighten up.    

We are working on some tags that you can print to be used next to wall 2D and shelf 3D. Hang in there~!! 

Delay of plans is preferable to error.

Kudos Korner – Lynda Orzen, Founding TRAG Member

Spotlight on Our Members

This month’s Kudo Korner contribution was given by multiple members of our Board:

 Lynda Orzen – Founding Member of TRAG.

Lynda Orzen has been involved with the Arts in Oregon City for over 20 years. She has been a strong voice of political activism for Oregon City for longer than that, and we are deeply grateful for her dedicated support in our community. Lynda is an integral part of our Three Rivers Artist Guild, and one of the main reasons we are in existence today.

Over the past two decades, Lynda has lent her personal involvement and support for the following art programs: The original Oregon City Arts Commission, the first Art Fair Event in Oregon City at Carnegie Park and the Pioneer Center which evolved into the Oregon City Festival of the Arts, the origination of our own Three Rivers Artist Guild, the main street “nomad” galleries in vacant retail and commercial spaces which is evolving into the SAGE project, and the origination of TRAG’s Holiday Show at the Pioneer Community Center.

However, Lynda’s accomplishments do not stop at promoting just Art in our Community. Lynda’s undying support for Oregon City also includes: serving as a member and Chair for Friends of the Library for more than 20 years, chairing the Political Action Committee for the new Library expansion, and working with the OC Police Department for a new police facility. All of these programs were passed and are still vibrant in part due to Lynda’s involvement. It is not surprising that Lynda was awarded Citizen of the year in 2015.

Lynda’s dedication for TRAG has never wavered. She still participates every year for the Festival of the Arts Committee, is a current and long-time member of our TRAG Board, manages the TRAG Holiday Show each year, publishes our TRAG newsletter each month, has recently volunteered to help with the Storefront Art Gallery and Events project (SAGE) which TRAG got funding for just last week, is assisting with the reinstitution of murals in Oregon City, and recently took a seat on the newest Oregon City Comprehensive Plan review committee to ensure that arts and culture take a prominent place in Oregon City’s overall plan.

I personally, as the current president of TRAG, would not know what to do without Lynda’s incomparable experience, input and willingness to give of her time. She is an exemplary model of what the word “volunteer” means, and how one person can change a City’s direction and culture. Please join me in giving Lynda a heartfelt Thank You and sincere acknowledgement of her support for the Three Rivers Artist Guild over the years. Let her be an example to all of us on how you can help our Guild and our community.

You are our hero!
